Shedding Some Light on Lasers

Drs. Phipps, Levin, & Hebeka have had extensive training in the use of dental lasers in the treatment of a number of oral conditions. We have years of experience in the use of soft tissue diode lasers as well as diagnostic lasers.

Laser technology employs a very delicate method of “erasing” oral soft tissue excesses. The diode laser allows us to better treat gum disease and to gently recontour the soft tissues in cosmetic cases. Periodontal, gum tissue procedures allow for minimally invasive surgery as an alternative to conventional, scalpel blade surgery. The laser permits very precise control and often is used to reduce or eliminate bleeding and the need for stitches.

The same type of laser instrument can also be used for the treatment of aphthous ulcers, commonly known as canker sores. The laser can transform a sore that hurts into a sore that does not hurt, with more rapid healing. Advantages of soft-tissue lasers√ may include minimal postoperative pain, minimally invasive surgeries, and in many cases, the elimination of bleeding and stitches. Certain phases of implant surgery can be safely accomplished with lasers.

Another use of lasers is to help identify decay in teeth. Shining a diagnostic laser instrument on a tooth causes possible decayed areas of the tooth to fluoresce (light-up) while producing no change in healthy tooth structure. The fluorescence is then measured, and it can help us in diagnosing the presence of decay. Detecting the presence of decay via laser fluorescence offers greater sensitivity than the conventional visual and touch methods. Early diagnosis small cavities makes minimally invasive dentistry possible.

Lastly, laser light has also been used to speed up the process for teeth whitening.

We believe that lasers in dentistry will continue to evolve as an important adjunct to our diagnostic and treatment options for our patients.
